Phonak Audéo EON Sphere is the newest generation of Phonak’s Sphere hearing aid technology. It builds on the speech-in-noise advancements introduced with Infinio Sphere while introducing the new HYPERSONIC AI processor, Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0, a hearing aid that is 25% smaller and 20% lighter, and more efficient use of battery power.

For patients, however, the most important question is not what the processor is called.

Can this technology help me understand people better when life gets noisy?

After more than 20 years as an audiologist, that is the question I care about as well.

We previously discussed how Phonak changed hearing aid processing with the dual-chip architecture of Phonak Infinio Sphere. EON Sphere takes that concept another generation forward.

Phonak Audéo EON Sphere is a premium AI-powered receiver-in-canal hearing aid that uses two specialized processors. Its new HYPERSONIC processor powers Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 to help separate speech from background noise in real time, while Phonak’s ERA platform manages the hearing aid’s other processing and connectivity functions.

Compared with the previous Sphere generation, EON Sphere is:

From DEEPSONIC to HYPERSONIC: What Changed?

The original Audéo Infinio Sphere was unusual because it did not ask one processor to do everything.

The ERA chip handled the hearing aid’s primary sound processing, wireless connectivity and everyday functions. A second processor—the DEEPSONIC chip—was dedicated to the intensive artificial intelligence processing used to separate speech from competing background noise.

With EON Sphere, Phonak has evolved that architecture by introducing the new HYPERSONIC AI processor.

That matters because sophisticated artificial intelligence requires considerable processing power. In a desktop computer, additional power consumption may not be particularly noticeable. In a tiny hearing aid designed to sit comfortably behind the ear for an entire day, it becomes a critical engineering consideration.

According to Phonak, the HYPERSONIC architecture is 37% more power efficient while running Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 compared with the previous generation running Spheric Speech Clarity 2.0.

That efficiency helped Phonak make EON Sphere substantially smaller while continuing to provide the intensive AI processing that makes Sphere technology different.

Why Power Efficiency Matters in an AI Hearing Aid

We hear the term artificial intelligence used everywhere today, but AI processing requires energy.

That presents a unique challenge in hearing aids. Everything—the processors, microphones, wireless antennas and rechargeable battery—must fit into a device small enough to comfortably wear behind the ear.

One of the important advances with HYPERSONIC is therefore not simply increased processing capability. It is processing efficiency.

The original Sphere showed what a dedicated AI processor could accomplish when listening conditions became extremely difficult. With EON, improved efficiency and Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 make that sophisticated processing practical in a considerably smaller package.

The easiest way I can describe Sphere technology is this:

It is about separation, not simply amplification.

Modern hearing aids are very good at making sounds audible. But making something louder and making speech easier to understand are not always the same thing.

Imagine sitting at a family gathering. Several relatives are talking. Someone is laughing behind you. Dishes are moving. There may be music playing or another conversation nearby.

A hearing aid can make those sounds audible.

But your auditory system still has to determine:

Which sound is the person I actually want to understand?

That is the problem Sphere technology is trying to address.

How Does the HYPERSONIC AI Chip Separate Speech From Noise?

Human speech contains distinctive acoustic patterns. The HYPERSONIC processor powers a deep neural network designed to recognize characteristics of speech and distinguish speech from competing environmental noise.

Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 analyzes complex sound environments in real time and creates greater separation between speech and surrounding noise—even when voices are coming from different directions.

Phonak reports that Spheric Speech in Loud Noise can provide up to a 10 dB signal-to-noise ratio benefit under challenging test conditions.

But there is an important distinction here.

We Don’t Necessarily Want to Eliminate Every Background Sound

If you are sitting in a restaurant, you should still feel as though you are in a restaurant.

If you are walking on a greenway, you should remain aware of your environment.

Completely eliminating every surrounding sound could make hearing feel unnatural and may reduce important environmental awareness.

What we want is better separation between speech and competing noise.

The conversation should become easier to distinguish while the surrounding environment remains present enough to sound natural.

That improved contrast can make listening much more comfortable and reduce the amount of effort required to follow conversation.

What Matters to Me After More Than 20 Years as an Audiologist

I have been practicing audiology for more than two decades and have worked with hearing technology from many different manufacturers.

During that time, I have watched hearing aids progress from relatively basic amplification systems into sophisticated digital devices capable of analyzing complex listening environments in real time.

But after all those years, what excites me most isn’t a new processor.

It isn’t an app.

And it isn’t a specification on a manufacturer’s brochure.

It is when a patient comes back excited because they were able to participate in a conversation that had previously been difficult.

Maybe they could follow their grandchildren around the dinner table.

Maybe they participated in a noisy family gathering instead of sitting quietly trying to piece together what everyone was saying.

One of My Early Experiences With EON Sphere

One of my patients recently evaluated the new Phonak EON Sphere hearing aids.

He approached the technology somewhat hesitantly at first.

When he returned, his response was very different.

He was so excited about how well he had been hearing that he couldn’t wait until we made it back into my office to tell me about his experience. He started talking about it while he was still in our waiting room as I came out to get him.

As an audiologist, those are the responses we wait for.

The Hearing Aid Is Only Half of the Equation

Purchasing an EON Sphere does not automatically guarantee that someone will hear well.

The technology gives audiologists sophisticated tools, but those tools still have to be applied correctly.

A comprehensive hearing evaluation gives us the starting point. But two people with similar audiograms may have very different speech-understanding abilities, ear-canal acoustics, sound tolerances and communication needs.

This is why selecting a hearing aid should involve more than choosing the newest technology.

Why Real Ear Measurement Still Matters—even With Artificial Intelligence

No hearing aid can restore hearing exactly to the way someone heard as a teenager.

I think it is important to be straightforward about that.

Our goal is to carefully evaluate the hearing, select appropriate technology, precisely program and verify it, and use the person’s remaining hearing as effectively as possible.

We want to bring communication ability as close to natural hearing as reasonably possible.

The real test isn’t simply how someone performs while sitting across from me in a quiet treatment room. It is what happens after they leave.

  • Can they participate at Thanksgiving dinner?
  • Can they follow a conversation while walking on the greenway?
  • Can they understand their spouse from another part of the room?
  • Can they keep up when several family members are talking?
  • Can they enjoy a restaurant instead of simply enduring it?

Those outcomes are much more meaningful than a specification on a hearing-aid brochure.

Who Should Consider Phonak EON Sphere?

EON Sphere may be particularly worth evaluating for someone who:

  • Hears reasonably well in quiet but struggles significantly in background noise
  • Has difficulty following conversations in restaurants
  • Struggles during family gatherings and group conversations
  • Frequently communicates with people positioned in different directions
  • Was interested in Sphere technology but preferred a smaller hearing aid
  • Spends considerable time in complex or rapidly changing listening environments
  • Wants broad Bluetooth connectivity
  • Uses or may benefit from Roger technology
  • Wants compatibility with emerging Auracast technology
  • Spends considerable time outdoors where wind noise can interfere with hearing

That does not mean everyone with hearing loss needs EON Sphere.

The appropriate technology should be selected according to the type and degree of hearing loss, speech-understanding ability, lifestyle, listening environments and individual communication goals.

Should Existing Infinio Sphere Users Upgrade to EON Sphere?

Not necessarily.

If you currently wear Infinio Sphere or Infinio Ultra Sphere and are doing extremely well, a newer processor does not suddenly make your current hearing aids ineffective.

EON does introduce meaningful improvements, including:

What I Think Matters Most About Phonak EON Sphere

After more than two decades of fitting hearing aids, I have learned to be cautious whenever a new technology is described as revolutionary.

Hearing aids improve constantly, and not every new feature fundamentally changes what a patient experiences.

What continues to make Sphere technology interesting to me is that it addresses one of the complaints I hear most frequently:

“I can hear people. I just can’t understand them when there is noise.”

The original Infinio Sphere showed what dedicated AI processing could contribute to that problem.

EON makes that concept more practical.

The HYPERSONIC processor allows Phonak to deliver Spheric Speech Clarity 3.0 with greater processing efficiency. The hearing aid is substantially smaller and lighter, automatic environmental management has advanced, and technologies such as Auracast and improved wind management expand where the devices may be useful.

But perhaps most importantly, I am starting to hear the type of feedback from patients that makes an audiologist pay attention.

Not:

“I love the new chip.”

But:

“I could hear everybody.”

That is the advancement that matters.
