How to Help Loved Ones with Hearing Loss during the Holidays

A meaningful way to spread the joy of the holiday season is by taking special measures to keep hearing-impaired loved ones in the conversation during festivities. People who struggle to hear often feel isolated, even when surrounded by family and friends. For individuals with untreated hearing  loss, the holidays often exacerbate depression and feelings of sadness. You can make the difference in the lives of your loved ones by extending your support and providing inspiration. The following are helpful tips for keeping your loved ones with hearing loss engaged in the merriments.

Minimize background noises

Hearing others during festive meals can be a challenge. For those with hearing loss, background noise makes it even more difficult to hear conversation. Make it a point to turn off the television and any background music during meals.

Provide good lighting

The ability to see facial expressions and the mouths of people speaking is important for a person with hearing loss. Good lighting during meals can ensure better communication. In addition to keeping the dining room well let, be mindful of such things as glares coming through the windows, which can block the ability to see faces, as well.

Tips for keeping the hearing impaired in the conversation

There are some things that it would be wonderful for everyone to do, in thoughtful consideration of a hearing impaired person. The following are tips for anyone wanting to be accommodate the needs of those who have suffered loss of hearing:

  • Speak slowly and clearly while projecting your voice; and don’t shout, mumble, or slur. Avoid chewing gum, smoking, and putting your hands to your face when speaking.
  • Avoid interrupting others who are speaking during the holiday meal because it makes it more difficult for a person with hearing loss to follow the conversation.
  • When speaking with a person who has hearing loss, face them and be sure you have their attention. It may be necessary to touch their arm, hand, or shoulder before speaking.
  • Don’t hesitate to rephrase what you or someone else has said, for the benefit of a person who didn’t hear or understand. Oftentimes, a particular sound in speech or certain words are difficult for the hearing impaired to decipher.
  • Make it a point to sit next to a person with hearing difficulties, for the purpose of acting as a patient advocate. It can make for a much better holiday celebration, if several people who are sensitive and considerate about engaging with a person with hearing loss also sit nearby.
  • At the dining table and throughout seasonal celebrations, seek out and stay close to the person with hearing loss. Find a quiet place for one-on-one conversation, to give your friend or loved one the enjoyment of a setting without cacophony in the background.

Overall, a great thing to do in the spirit of the holidays is to be attentive and vigilant, aware if those with hearing loss become overly quiet. Help to keep them engaged in the occasion and the conversation.
